Happy Wednesday Everyone.

A note was sent home with the youngest and/or only child for each family regarding the need for tickets to the Christmas concert.  Please fill out and return this form whether your need 0 tickets or 12.  It is the only way we can ensure that families who request extra tickets are able to receive them.  This form is due tomorrow.

We are in the process of collecting gently used toys and other household items to be donated to the Santa Store.  No clothes or candles please.

A few Grade Eight students have not yet paid for their Grade Eight Farewell photo.  If this is you, please take care of this $11.00 payment online.  Thanks!!!

Good afternoon everyone.  Please be advised that there will be no Track and Field this week.  The weather is not cooperating with us so we will have to reschedule for some time in the fall.

Monday, October 1, 2018

Hello everyone and welcome to October.  I can't believe the first month of school is already gone.  We have a very busy month in front of us so keep your eyes on the Important Dates to Remember for October.  The first thing you'll want to remember is our Pancake Breakfast tomorrow morning.  This is in honour of Mr. MacKenzie's birthday.  You'll also want to wear your Jack MacKenzie wear tomorrow.

We have a few short weeks this month.  There is no school this Friday, next Monday, and Friday, Oct. 26th.

Have a fabulous day everyone.

Tuesday, September 25, 2018

Hey everyone.  There will be no Track and Field tomorrow due to our cold, wet weather.  It has been re-booked for October 11th.  Hopefully the weather is more cooperative at that time.  Our Terry Fox Walk is happening on Thursday afternoon.  Remember to bring your Toonies for Terry.

Friday, September 21, 2018

Hello everyone.  We survived another five-day week - yay us!  It helps that this is such a fabulous class.  Please keep an eye on the Homework Updates.  Grade 7's have a math test on Monday as well as worksheet to complete.  We also will be correcting the next CARS (reading strategies) worksheet.

A few students are behind on a few assignments - you know who you are.  Please remember that privileges such as Gym Blast are not for students with unfinished homework.  Get it done and get it in . . . with your name on it!

Next week we will be busy.  We have Track and Field, Terry Fox Walk, a couple of assemblies and Umoja starts rehearsing on Friday at lunch.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Friday, September 14, 2018

Hey everyone.  Thanks for a great full week.  I know some of us are feeling exhausted as we're not used to working so hard, so rest up this weekend.

We started our QSP fundraiser this week.  Please, please, please participate.  Every magazine subscription you sell, helps bring something special to our school.  We all benefit from this effort so it would be fabulous if we all participated.

Picture day is next week.  Keep your eyes on the Important Dates for September and the Homework Updates so that you don't miss anything.  We have several assignments due on Monday, so make sure you're ready with those.  If you forgot to take something home to work on this weekend, you can always catch up in the homework room during the lunch hour on Monday.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Good evening everyone.  Thanks for an awesome day at Treaty Four.  My ankle is just sprained so if I'm not there tomorrow, I will be back very soon.  This is just a quick reminder for the band students that band sectionals start tomorrow.  Remember your instruments!

Friday, August 31, 2018

Welcome back to school.  I'm thrilled to be here for another year and I cannot wait to get to know everyone in my class as well as your families.  I know that starting this year feels different as we sadly acknowledge the passing of our leader, Mr. MacKenzie.  In honor of him, we will all work together to keep his motto alive, "Where effort and kindness count!"

I have attached your class schedule but I will also be handing out a paper copy of this in class:

Fabulous potluck today - I ate too much as I'm sure everyone else did.  Thanks to all the parents who made our wonderful meal possible.

The following note was sent home with the grade 7 parents today:

Tuesday, June 12, 2017

Dear Parents/Guardians of Grade 7 students:

This is a friendly reminder that we need your help to ensure that our Grade Eight Farewell is a success.  As we have done in previous years, the grade seven students and their parents, provide the desserts/dainties and the service for the reception following the farewell ceremony.  This is happening one week from today on Tuesday, June 19th.  Some of you have already responded to our original newsletter.  Tammy Lueken, Jenn Robertson, Kaleb Grittner, Karen Schlamp and Sabiha Othman have volunteered to help with the reception but we still need many more names for organizing the reception on the morning and the evening of the reception.  We also need to have a few volunteers to take the lead in the organizing and serving of the reception.  Our current parent volunteers are listed below:

Tammy Lueken
Sabiha Othman
Karen Schlamp
Kaleb Girttner
Jenn Robertson

The attached list shows what contributions are being provided from each family.
We do not yet have a commitment to provide dainties/squares from all of our grade seven students.  Remember, next year this event will be for you and at that time you will be taken care of by the grade seven class of next year.  All food items need to be brought to the Arts/Science room on the morning of June 19th and they must be entirely nut-free.  Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,

Angela Scott, Marilyn Embury, Kyle DuMont, Kevin Yeske, Taylor Hollinger

Monday, June 11, 2018

Good afternoon everyone:

Today several of you had one more wake up call about overdue assignments.  Please remember that the latest I can take in any of these assignments is this Wednesday, June 13th.

Our class potluck is tomorrow.  Remember your food.  Also due right away - all library books.  If you have any books at home, please bring them back asap.

Have a great day everyone.

Monday, June 4, 2018

Good afternoon everyone.

We are into our final month of the school year.  We have a lot of important dates coming up so please keep your eyes on the Important Dates for June.  Tomorrow is Track and Field.  Competing students need to come dressed for track, bring a lunch and plenty of water.  There will be a canteen available so bringing money is also an option.  Other students are expected to be at school for the day.

As we are into our final month, it is sometimes difficult to stay focused and on top of assignments.  Please remember that we have 17 school days left and each of those days are important.  Stay focused, keep getting assignments done and attendance is still very important.  We're almost there!

Just in case this note didn't make it home . . .

April 24, 2018
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Beginning Thursday, April 26th, our next unit of study in the Health class will be Sexual Health.  The purpose of this unit is to equip students with the information they need to make healthy life decisions and to support others to do the same.  We will cover topics such as sexual knowledge, attitudes and healthy decision making.  The curriculum outcomes regarding this study are as follows:
Assess the social, cultural, and environmental influences on and supports for sexual health knowledge, attitudes, behaviours, and decisions.
Appraise the role of “support” in making healthy decisions related to family roles and responsibilities, non-curable infections/diseases, violence and abuse, body image, sustainability, and sexual health.
Analyze the health opportunities and challenges, and establish “support others” personal goal statements, related to family roles and responsibilities, non-curable infections/diseases, violence and abuse, body image, sustainability, and sexual health.
As part of this unit, I have invited Planned Parenthood in to give a special presentation called, “After the Talk”.  The purpose of this presentation is to discuss safe sex practices, contraception, sexually transmitted infections and consent.  They will be showing a power point presentation, discussing how pregnancy occurs, how to prevent pregnancy, what STI’s are and how they can be prevented.  If you are not comfortable allowing your child to see this power point, please let me know and they will be excused from the class.  An alternate assignment will then be sent home for your child to complete with you, in order to meet the curriculum requirements. This presentation will take place on Tuesday, May 8th.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the above, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I can be reached at the school at (306) 791-8585 or by email: angela.scott@rbe.sk.ca.
Take care and enjoy the rest of your week.
Sincerely,
Angela Scott

Hello everyone.

Grade 8's, tomorrow is Grade 8 Farewell Photo Day.  Individual photos will be done in the morning.  In the afternoon, we will be boarding a bus and travelling to Mr. MacKenzie's residence to take the group photo with him.  We have not done this in the past as Mr. MacKenzie has come to the school for the picture in past years.   We apologize for the delay in communicating our plans.

Have a great evening.

Thursday, April 19, 2018

Hello and Happy April.  I hope you all had a great Spring Break.  Hopefully the weather starts cooperating soon and it will actually feel like spring.

Any Grade Sevens who are interested in writing the Waterloo, Gauss Math contest, please see me ASAP.  We need to register by April 20th.  To prepare, we will be fast tracking through the rest of the Grade Seven Math Curriculum using Pre-Assessments and old math contest papers.  We will be meeting twice a week; after school on Mondays and before school on Thursdays.  If you are unable to make one of those times, I can also meet during lunch hours on Day 3.

Please take a peak at the Homework Updates and Dates to Remember for April.  Remember to bring your money this week to participate in the various special days to raise money for Teddy Bears Anonymous.

Have a great day everyone.

Dear Jack Mack Families,

Pedestrian safety continues to be a growing concern around Elementary Schools. We are lucky to have student volunteers who have been trained by the Regina Police Services to help the younger students cross our street safely.  As they are doing their job to protect, we ask parents and families for assistance.  Please be extra alert as you drive through our intersection.  If Patrollers are in the street, holding up their Stop sign, please stop your vehicle.  Since they have direct orders to not stop moving vehicles, they cannot enter the street when a vehicle is coming.  Please be sensitive to this.  They have received the training and are following proper protocol.   Many times, however, drivers do not adhere to their signs, and continue to drive through our stationed patrollers.  This puts our patrollers and young pedestrians at risk.

Let’s all work together to make our road safe!  Please be attentive, patient, and a positive role model.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Jack Mack Safety Patrol

Hello everyone.

Tonight Planned Parenthood will be here at the school to discuss how to talk to teens about sexual health.  This will take place in the Arts/Science room from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.

Celebration of Learning is happening this Thursday.  Students are expected to be with their project, ready to present to anyone visiting for the entire afternoon as well as from 4:00 pm to 6:45 pm.  If you are not able to stick around for Thursday evening, please come to present your project sometime between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm on Friday.  There are no classes on Friday.

After the Celebration of Learning on Thursday evening, we will have our information meeting with Grade 8's parents.  This is to discuss the Grade 8 Farewell, happening on June 19th.  This meeting should begin at 7:00 pm and run until 8:00 pm.  If you are not able to make it to this meeting, but would like to help with the preparations in some way, please let me know.  We can connect you with the other parents after the meeting.

Thanks for checking in.

Good afternoon parents.

The following letter was sent home earlier this week but here is a copy, in case you didn't see it earlier.

Monday, March 5, 2018
Dear Parents,
Planned Parenthood Regina (PPR) is pleased to announce their Educational Blitz for Adults project supported by the Community Initiatives Fund (CIF). This campaign aims to directly educate and impact adults, parents and service providers who work with youth to inform, equip and enhance their skills to “begin the conversation” with younger generations about sexual health.
Saskatchewan has the highest rates of STI’s, HIV and unplanned pregnancy per capita in Canada. As an agency Planned Parenthood Regina has seen a growing number of phone calls from parents and community service providers asking for assistance with accurate information on sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) and contraceptives. Parents and community service providers are also asking for information on how to speak with youth about sexual health. Many adults claim that as youth they were never provided with this information and never had important adults in their lives talk to them about sexual health.
On Monday, March 12 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm, Planned Parenthood will be at Jack MacKenzie School to meet with parents and offer suggestions/guidance to address sexual health questions and concerns of youth they know. The education program focuses on addressing the importance of talking with youth about sexual health and provides information, discussion and resources to participants. The evening will be geared towards parents with children in Grades 5 and up however, all parents/caregivers are welcome to attend. Please note, this is an evening for adults only as it is not intended to replace the conversation at home.
If you have any questions please contact Marilyn Embury @ Marilyn.embury@rbe.sk.ca or Amanda Scollan @ abscollan@gmail.com
We are looking forward to an informative night of gaining insight on teachable moments and tips for talking to kids on this very important topic.
Sincerely,

Amanda Scollan and Marilyn Embury

Thursday, March 8, 2018

Good afternoon everyone.

We are cruising through the Month of March and those due dates are not going away.  Please spend time this weekend, finishing up your Heritage Fair essays and display boards.  Speeches are due Monday, March 19th, so please spend time on those this weekend too.

We have a busy week coming up.  Grade 8's have Tartan's in Training during the morning of Tuesday, March 13th.  We are all going to the Do It With Class production, The Wiz, on Wednesday, March 14th.  Your Heritage Fair projects will be the focus of our Celebration of Learning on Thursday, March 15th from 4 - 7 pm and on Friday, March 16th from 9 am - 12 pm.  If you are present on Thursday evening, you do not need to come on Friday morning.  There are no classes on Friday.

We are still waiting for some payments.  The DIWC matinee on Wednesday needs to be paid for online as well as the payment for the spirit flute project.  The sooner we get those payments the sooner we can place the order and get going on the project.

That's all for now.  Have a great evening and remember that you have the day off tomorrow.
